Driving with your pet as your passenger is a lot of fun and often necessary - whether it’d be vet appointments, grocery trips, or an extended road trip. And like any member of your family traveling with you, there are precautions you can take to keep your pet safe on the road. Here are a few tips on how to transport pets in a car.

1. Use a pet crate

One of the safest ways to travel with your pet is by using a crate, which will ensure that they are comfortable and secure. The ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) specifies crates as one of their top car transport safety tips for pets. Be sure that the crate you’re using is large enough for your pet to stand up, turn around, and comfortably lie down in. Having your pet in a crate also prevents distractions while driving. We recommend:

  • Placing the crate in the cargo of your SUV or truck, or the back seat of your car.
  • Lining the floor with blankets so your pet is nice and comfortable.
  • Getting your pet used to the crate at home before travelling in it.

2. Install a pet hammock

A pet hammock doubles as a seat protector and lays across the backseat of your car with fasteners attached to the rear and front headrests. It’s easy to install, clean, and is typically waterproof. Hammocks also prevent small pets from falling off of the seat and stops them from climbing into the front of the vehicle.

3. Fit a pet harness seat belt

Most commonly used for dogs, a pet harness plugs into the seat belt and securely buckles them in. Active dogs do well with zipline harnesses that are designed to allow them to move around while protecting them in the event of an accident.

4. Use a backseat barrier

Backseat barriers keep your pet safe should you brake suddenly or collide with another object. It also stops them from climbing into the front and protects them from being thrown forward during an accident. Backseat barriers are ideal for pets that struggle to settle.

5. Start them off on the right foot

From day one, start your pet in your chosen mode of transport - whether it’s a crate, harness, hammock, or barrier. If you’re a new owner about to travel with your pet for the first time, here are some additional tips for a smooth ride:

  • Start with shorter journeys and build up the distance
  • Schedule plenty of stops for longer trips
  • Feed your pet a couple of hours before your trip

Of course, all pets are different and will prefer a certain method of transport. Remember, the above car transport safety tips for your pet are to keep them safe and secure in case of an accident.
