5 Road Trip Safety Tips for the Holidays

The holidays have arrived and it’s the time of year when family and friends gather together to create lasting memories. For many of us, that means driving on ice and snow-covered roads to get to holiday destinations—sometimes for long distances.

Aside from a tune-up and inspection from your Chevrolet-certified service department, there are several other ways to ensure your safety when you’re driving this holiday season.

1. Weather Check

Respecting winter roads is vital to getting where you need to be safely and an unexpected snowstorm can quickly throw you off track. It only takes a few minutes to check the weather before you leave—check your weather app or turn on the news to see if blizzards, storms, or other unfavorable winter weather is in the forecast so you can make an informed decision about whether you should be driving.

2. Install Winter Tires

Winter can be unpredictable, and you need to be prepared for anything. Part of preparing your vehicle for icy roads is by ensuring you have winter tires installed. While all-seasons can get you through inclement weather safely, they’re not a replacement for winter tires. Winter tires are designed for prolonged temperature drops, ice, and deep snow—all common conditions in Minnesota's winters.

3. Plan Ahead

The holiday season is synonymous with being busy. Malls are bustling with shoppers, roads are bumper-to-pumper, and people are out in full swing making last-minute holiday preparations. For this reason, leaving before you need to is always a smart idea. This can help you ensure you arrive on time and reduce the need for rushing and panicked driving.

4. Prepare for Emergencies

Vehicle emergencies are a real threat during the holidays. Accidents, dead batteries, and getting snuck in snowdrifts are all common occurrences this time of year. Always be prepared with a fully-equipped emergency roadside kit that’s stocked with jumper cables, a backup phone battery, water, snacks, and blankets.

5. Don’t Drink and Drive

While it goes without saying, you can never be too careful when it comes to driving sober. If you’re the holiday designated driver, be responsible for the safety of yourself and others by staying sober. Always be prepared with a safe ride if you’re having a few drinks.

Enjoy the Holiday Season

Above all, we wish you and your loved ones a happy, healthy holiday season. We thank you for your continued support in the past year and look forward to continuing to serve you in the year ahead.
